A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at a summer camp in the Waterloo region after a camper tested positive for the virus.

The outbreak was announced in a press briefing on Tuesday by Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Waterloo. The region's online COVID-19 dashboard also shows one case at the summer camp. No name or other details were given about the camp. Wang said the health unit is currently investigating whether the case was from travel or community spread.

"Camps can be relatively small in terms of numbers, so we want to make sure we can protect privacy," said Dr. Wang.

"The important thing is to make sure is that all the potential affected families and staff are informed and follows up with case and contacts, and usually the camp operators will then send out information to make sure parents get the information they need."

Wang added that the camp does not need to shut down even though an outbreak has been declared.

"It really depends on the specific situation that's encountered when a child or a staff is diagnosed with COVID, and then, the potential risk that we think there may be to others and whether or not they have sufficient staffing and wish to continue or not."

Wang says the camp did have a policy for mask wearing. However, she says the camper could have contracted the virus elsewhere in the community, and not necessarily at the camp.

"What this does though, when we declare a camp in outbreak, is that we make sure that we put in all the measures to try to prevent further spread and make sure that the outbreak doesn't grow anymore than it has to," Wang said.

As for cases in the Waterloo region, one new positive has been announced today. However, the total number of cases dropped by three, as the region is continually updating and adjusting its online dashboard to match the provincial system.

As of Tuesday morning, there have been a total of 1,438 positive cases in the Waterloo region, with a total of 66,315 COVID tests performed.

The health unit is also reporting an active outbreak at a Golden Years long-term care home in Cambridge, Ont., after a person living there tested positive for the coronavirus last week.

As for the rest of the province, Ontario reported 100 new COVID cases Tuesday, bringing the province's total to 41,607 since the outbreak began in January.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a series of tweets that the 0.2 per cent increase in cumulative cases across Ontario comes as the province's network of labs processed more than 20,000 tests yesterday.
