Pair in their 20s were believed to be in a relationship, Peel police say
A woman is dead and a man is seriously injured after a shooting at a home in Brampton on Tuesday afternoon, Peel police say.
They were both in their 20s and were believed to be in a relationship, according to Const. Kyle Villers, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police. The man lived at the home with his family, while the woman was visiting, he told reporters.
"At this point, we believe this ... is an isolated incident," Villers said. "We believe that the two people involved in the incident are the only two people involved at this point in time."
Officers were called to the home by a family member in the area of Deerpark Crescent and Fairglen Avenue, near Williams Parkway and McLaughlin Road North, at about 2:28 p.m.
When police arrived, they found the woman and man inside, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Peel paramedics said the man was taken to a local hospital.
Villers said he could not say who "did what" to whom and it's too early to speculate.
Kevin Bettencourt, a resident who lives down the street, said he didn't hear or see anything, but a neighbour alerted his father to the commotion on the street after police, firefighters and paramedics arrived.
"It definitely frightens you. You hear about crime in Brampton skyrocketing over the years, but it definitely hits home when it's three houses down from your house," he said.
The Peel police homicide and missing persons bureau is expected to take over the investigation.
Deerpark Crescent was closed to traffic as officers investigated. Police were expected to be at the scene for some time.
