This Happened to Me is a video series from CBC Radio that explores the turning points in our lives — the moments that changed everything.
This season, in the midst of a global pandemic, we featured stories of Canadians who have battled the coronavirus, including a man who was a passenger on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, a father who had to be intubated, and an ER doctor who got to witness the response to COVID-19 from inside the hospital system.

I got COVID-19 on the Diamond Princess cruise ship

Canadian John Craig Lee was travelling on the Diamond Princess when the ship was quarantined in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, in early February. During the 14-day quarantine, Lee also tested positive for the virus.

How I became New Brunswick's first case of COVID-19 community transmission

When Kym Murphy, a 54-year-old school bus driver in Rothesay, N.B., started to feel unwell, she didn't suspect COVID-19. After all, she was washing her hands, she was practising physical distancing and importantly, she hadn't been travelling.

When René Segura started feeling ill, his wife Tracy Segura implored him to go to the hospital. Although he'd been to a COVID-19 assessment centre and was told he had a cold, he heeded his wife's advice. Soon he was in hospital with COVID-19 — intubated and fighting for his life.
