First lines

Jeremy comes down the stairs with his red plastic binoculars slung around his neck, white socks pulled up too high and held in place by rubber bands. Why is he doing this again? Two weeks ago, the school called to say the rubber bands were making deep grooves in Jeremy's skin and were cutting off his circulation. Barbara pretended this was news to her when, in fact, she'd pleaded with Jeremy to take off the rubber bands that very morning and just be ok with his socks creeping down throughout the day. Now, with school finally over for the year, she again pretends she doesn't notice while considering how slack her mothering has become.
