Mary and Frankenstein, known in Canada as Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein, has been shortlisted for the U.K.'s CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal, an annual award recognizing excellence in children's book illustration.
The nonfiction picture book was written by Winnipeg-born, Vancouver-based Linda Bailey and illustrated by Spanish creator Júlia Sardà.
The CILIP Kate Greenaway and Carnegie Medals and the U.K.'s oldest book awards for children and young people.
Sardà's other books include The Liszts by Toronto author Kyo Maclear and updated versions of the classic stories Mary Poppins and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Bailey's other titles include Carson Crosses Canada and a series of picture books about a dog named Stanley, illustrated by Bill Slavin.
The 2020 selected books explore themes of environmentalism, acceptance, kindness and bravery.
The two eight-book shortlists were narrowed down from longlists of 20 books.
The CILIP Carnegie Medal, which recognizes outstanding children's writing in English, did not feature any Canadians on its 2020 shortlist.
The winners of the CILIP Kate Greenaway and Carnegie Medals are chosen by a panel of 14 children's librarians.
Both winners will receive £5,000 ($8,366 Cdn), a gold medal and £500 ($837 Cdn) worth of books to donate to their local library.
The winners will be announced on June 17, 2020.
