Accused murderer Brandin Brick and his alleged victim James Chaisson were members of rival Saskatchewan gangs, Brick's trial in Saskatoon heard during its first day Monday.
Brick, now 28, is on trial in Saskatoon Court of Queen's Bench for the alleged kidnapping and first-degree murder of Chaisson on Feb. 14, 2018. It's a judge-only trial.
Chaisson, 28, died from his injuries after being found near the sidewalk on Avenue P South.
Constable Katherine Nash testified that she found Chaisson there and immediately recognized him as a member of the Saskatchewan Warriors gang. He had no pulse and a small hole in his chest.

Brick's mother, Karin Roem, testified for the Crown that on the day before Chaisson's death, Feb. 13, Brick came to her home a few blocks away on Avenue U S and grabbed a loaded gun from her bedroom closet. He took a bullet out and the left. She said she had never seen the gun before.
Roen and Brick's stepfather both identified Brick as member of another gang, the Terror Squad.
Nash said the two gangs were not getting along at the time of Chaisson's death.
Chaisson's death was the second homicide of 2018.
