About Akil Augustine

Born in Trinidad and Tobago to a Rastafarian father and Roman Catholic mother, Akil's family emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, in the mid-1980s, during the start of the crack epidemic. He and his older sister, Ayanna, were sent to Toronto for school, which would eventually become their home.
After graduating from Seneca College's broadcast journalism program, Akil's first job was setting up a multimedia curriculum and store front workspace for at risk youth in Scarborough, Ont., in partnership with East Metro Youth Services. At the same time, Akil was a founding member of the Hoop Factory Basketball Camps and the Northern King's AAU program, working with youth across the GTA, through skill development on and off the court.
Over the past 15 years of Akil's career, he has worked with the National Basketball Association, Toronto Raptors, National Hockey League, Toronto Maple Leafs and Major League Soccer, as well as brands like Chapters Indigo and Nike, as a content creator and producer.
An avid public speaker, Akil works with educators facilitating free Storytelling workshops to high school and post-secondary students.
