The province's police watchdog is investigating the events surrounding the death of a man who went into medical distress at the Selkirk RCMP detachment.
RCMP officers in Selkirk responded to a call at a residence in the rural municipality of St. Andrews around 1:30 a.m. Monday.
A 54-year-old man was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Selkirk detachment, says a news release from the Independent Investigation Unit.
Shortly after police arrived with him at the station, the man became unresponsive and went into medical distress, the news release says.
Nearby officers performed CPR and contacted emergency medical services, but attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene, the IIU said.
