Margaret Atwood's The Testaments, the sequel to her 1985 novel The Handmaid's Tale, is being developed for screen by Hulu and MGM Television.
The studios already produce the Emmy Award-winning television series based on The Handmaid's Tale, which has been renewed for a fourth season.
The Handmaid's Tale showrunner Bruce Miller is in talks with Hulu and MGM Television to determine how the new novel will become an extension to the existing series.
The Elisabeth Moss-led show departed from the book after season one. The Testaments picks up 15 years after the end of the first novel, and contains the "explosive testaments" of three female narrators.
The new novel, already shortlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize and longlisted for the 2019 Scotiabank Giller Prize, will reveal more about the inner-workings of the dystopian society Gilead.
The Testaments is available worldwide on Sept. 10.
Atwood will be on CBC's The Next Chapter to discuss the book on Saturday, Sept. 7.
