Manitoba votes 2019: St. Johns riding profile

The north Winnipeg riding of St. Johns has been around since 1958.
The riding runs from Leila Avenue and Scotia Street in the north and Church Avenue, Main Street and Redwood Avenue in the south. It's bounded to the west by Arlington Street and the CPR Winnipeg Beach rail line and by the Red River to the east.
The riding includes the neighbourhoods of St. Johns, Seven Oaks, Luxton and Jefferson.
Its population is 21,300, according to the province's 2018 riding profile(external link) (compiled from the 2016 census).
The median age of the riding is roughly on par with the overall provincial median, at 37.8 in St. Johns compared to 38.3 provincewide, according to the 2018 riding profile(external link) and the 2016 census(external link). The census found the median household income in the area is $59,455.

  • Just over six per cent of residents reported they speak Tagalog most often at home on the 2016 census, according to the province's 2018 profile.(external link)
  • Roughly 20 per cent of residents identified as Indigenous, the profile says.
  • The median value of a home in the riding is $224,511, the profile says, and roughly two-thirds of residents reported they own their home.

Voting history

The riding has been NDP for nearly 60 years. Before that, it was represented by the precursor to the NDP, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.
