It's bounded to the north by Bishop Grandin Boulevard, to the east by St. Anne's Road and to the west by the Red River. Its southern boundary runs from Southglen Boulevard along Dakota Street, Warde Avenue and St. Mary's Road.
The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Bright Oaks, Meadowood, Southglen and South St. Vital.
The riding's population is 22,100, according to the province's 2018 riding profile (compiled from the 2016 census).
The median age of the riding is older than the provincial median, at 44.5 in Riel and 38.3 provincewide, according to the 2018 riding profile and the 2016 census. The census found the median household income in the area is $83,669.

- Roughly three per cent of residents said they speak French most often at home in the 2016 census, according to the 2018 riding profile.
- Roughly 20 per cent of residents identified as immigrants, the profile says.
