Manitoba votes 2019: Kildonan-River East riding profile

The northeast Winnipeg riding of Kildonan-River East is made up of large pieces of the former Kildonan and River East ridings.
The riding straddles the Red River, bounded to the north by city limits on the west side of the river and by Glenway Avenue on the east side of the river. Its southern boundary runs along Leila Avenue on the west side of the river and Rossmere Crescent on the east side of the river.
The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Kildonan Drive, Valhalla, River East, Rivergrove and Riverbend, and a small portion of the north of Seven Oaks.
The riding's population is 21,635, according to the province's 2018 riding profile(external link) (compiled from the 2016 census).
The median age of the riding is older than the overall provincial median, at 47.1 compared to 38.3 provincewide, according to the 2018 riding profile(external link) and the 2016 census(external link). The census found the median household income in the area is $74,294.

  • Roughly 24 per cent of residents are aged 65 and older, compared to 15.6 per cent provincewide, according to the 2018 profile.(external link)
  • Roughly 13 per cent of residents identified as visible minorities in the 2016 census, the profile says.
  • The median value of a home in the riding is $330,009, the profile says, and roughly two-thirds of residents reported they own their home.

Voting history

The former River East riding has been Progressive Conservative since 1986.
The former Kildonan riding was NDP from 1990 until the 2016 provincial election:
  • 1988 election: Liberal.
  • 1990-2011 (six general elections): NDP.
  • 2016 election: Progressive Conservative.

  • Kathryn Braun (Liberal).
  • Cathy Cox (Progressive Conservative).
  • Elliot Macdonald (NDP).
