The south-central Winnipeg riding of Fort Garry has been on the books since the 1958 provincial general election, although its named changed to Fort Garry-Riverview in 2008.
The name was switched back to Fort Garry in the 2018 riding redistribution, when the boundaries of the riding were also moved slightly. Since the boundary change, the riding — which voted NDP in the 2016 election — now has more electors who voted Progressive Conservative than who voted NDP.
The updated riding's boundaries are Pembina Highway, Jubilee Avenue and the Red River in the east and Waverly Street, Taylor Avenue, Poseidon Bay and Cambridge Street in the west. To the north, it's bounded by Grant Avenue, Stafford Street and Corydon Avenue, and its southern boundary runs along Bishop Grandin Boulevard, Pembina Highway and the park boundary south of Thatcher Drive.
The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Beaumont, Maybank, Fort Garry and Wildwood.
Its population is 23,165, according to the province's 2018 riding profile(external link) (compiled from the 2016 census).
The median age of the riding is similar to the overall provincial median, at 37 compared to 38.3 provincewide, according to the 2018 riding profile(external link) and the 2016 census(external link). The census found the median household income in the area is $59,166.
More facts about Fort Garry:
  • More than 27 per cent of residents identified as visible minorities in the 2016 census, according to the province's 2018 profile.(external link)
  • Just under 23 per cent of residents identified as immigrants, the profile says.
  • More than 45 per cent of residents said they rent their homes.

Voting history

The Fort Garry riding has been orange for the past 15 years. However, the redistribution of ridings in December 2018 means the updated riding now has more electors who voted Progressive Conservative in the last election than who voted NDP.
  • 1958 to 1986 (nine general elections): Progressive Conservative.
  • 1988 election: Liberal.
  • 1990, 1995 and 1999 elections: Progressive Conservative.
  • 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2016 elections: NDP.
