The Maples became a riding in the 1990 provincial general election, when voters chose Liberal MLA Gulzar Cheema. The northwest Winnipeg riding includes the Lord Selkirk, West Kildonan, Mandalay West and Amber Trails neighbourhoods.
Its boundaries were changed significantly in 2018, thanks to population growth that brought its total population to 30,430 — well above the overall target of just over 22,000.
Now, the riding runs between Mollard Road in the North and Jefferson Avenue, Adum Drive and the CP rail line in the south. It's bounded by Pipeline Road, Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street in the east and city limits in the west.
Its population is 23,185, according to the province's 2018 riding profile(external link) (compiled from the 2016 census) slightly above the province's 22,000-person target.
The median age of the riding is slightly below the overall provincial median, at 35.7 in The Maples compared to 38.3 provincewide, according to the 2018 riding profile(external link) and the 2016 census(external link). The census found the median household income in the area is $27,498.

Corrections:
  • We initially reported that this riding includes the Winnipeg neighbourhoods of Kingston Crescent, Norberry, Worthington, Victoria Crescent and Pulberry. In fact, those neighbourhoods are in the St. Vital riding. August 19, 2019 2:08 PM
