Chip Zdarsky, Jeff Lemire & Faith Erin Hicks among Canadians to pick up Eisner Awards at San Diego Comic-Con

Chip Zdarsky, Jeff Lemire and Faith Erin Hicks were among the Canadians creators to win Eisner Awards, known as the "Oscars" of comics, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 over the weekend.
Zdarsky won the best single issue/one shot award for Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #310. The Toronto-based artist has been making comics since 2013, co-creating the series Sex Criminals and writing new stories for classic characters like Archie, Daredevil and Howard the Duck.
Lemire, another Toronto creator, won best new series for Gideon Falls with his Italian co-creator Andrea Sorrentino. The series follows an anti-social young man and a Catholic priest who show up in a small town haunted by a supernatural, misery-inducing building called The Black Barn.
Lemire previously won best new series for Black Hammer with Dean Ormston in 2017. His next book is the graphic novel Frogcatcher, a horror comic following a young man who wakes up without his memory in an ominous, nearly empty building.
Hicks won the best publication for kids (ages 9-12) category for The Divided Earth, the final book in her acclaimed Nameless City trilogy. The fantasy series follows two unlikely friends, Rat and Kai, as they get caught up in their city's deadly power struggle.
Kingsville, Ont., artist Jason Fabok won the best short story category alongside Tom King for The Talk of the Saints from Swamp Thing Winter Special. Fabok is currently working on Batman: Three Jokers for DC Comics.
Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection, adapted by Junji Ito and translated by Toronto's Jocelyne Allen, won the best adaptation from another medium category.
Washington, D.C.-based creator Tom King had a big night, taking home four of the five awards he was nominated for, including best writer.
L.A.-based Jen Wang picked up two awards — including best writer/artist — for her middle-grade graphic novel The Prince and the Dressmaker.
John Allison, Max Sarin and Julia Madrigal also won two awards for Giant Days, winning for best continuing series and best humour publication.
