Despite a low vacancy rate and summer tourism season in full swing, all 52 residents of an apartment building in Charlottetown destroyed by fire Wednesday morning have found places to live, at least temporarily.

All the residents of a Charlottetown apartment building got out safely when a fire destroyed their homes early Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday a fire destroyed a 29-unit apartment building on Harley Street, leaving the 52 residents homeless.

Thursday, at about 7:30 a.m., firefighters were called back to the building. A neighbour reported a small bit of smoke and flame.

"When we got here we couldn't really source it," said Dep. Fire Chief Tim Mamye.

"We knew the general area and went up and soaked the area thoroughly."

The Red Cross has found temporary accommodation for the residents of the building. Killam Apartments REIT, the building's owner, says it plans to rebuild on the site.

Charlottetown considers ending ditch infilling program

After completing much of the city over the past few decades, city staff say there are maintenance and environmental concerns associated with the program.

The city estimates there are about 12.5 K of residential ditches left to be infilled.

The recommendation is now in the hands of council, which will vote on it at an upcoming meeting.
