Brazilian artist Odyr will be adapting and illustrating George Orwell's classic 1945 book Animal Farm as a graphic novel. It will be available in Canada on Sept. 3, 2019.

The satirical tale follows the uprising of farmyard animals, led by pigs Old Major, Napoleon and Snowball, against their drunken and forgetful owner. But as a new order is established, the original ideals of the rebellion are corrupted by the pursuit of power.

"Today it is all too clear that Orwell's masterpiece is still fiercely relevant wherever cults of personality thrive, truths are twisted by those in power and freedom is under attack," said the publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, on their website.

Described as "the conscience of his generation," Orwell wrote Animal Farm as an allegory of the Russian Revolution and rise of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Animal Farm was a financial success and was followed four years later by 1984.

Odyr's previous works include the graphic novels Guadalupe, co-written with Angélica Freitas, and Copacabana, co-written with Lobo.

Animal Farm is the latest classic work to get the graphic novel treatment. Recent novels turned into comics include The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, adapted by Canadian artist Renee Nault, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, adapted by British illustrator Fred Fordham.
