The Municipality of West Nipissing has declared a state of emergency due to flooding.

The municipality says its emergency control group is monitoring conditions closely and has activated its emergency plan.

It says some residents may be asked to leave, as rising water levels continue to affect road conditions. A number of roads are currently under water or at risk of washing out.

As a result, a nearby community centre is being booked for accommodations if needed.

Flood warnings remain in place across northeastern Ontario

As flood warnings remain in place throughout the region, officials are keeping a close eye on water levels as heavy rain is in the forecast.

The Town of Mattawa has declared a State of Emergency due to extra water coming from the Otto Holden Dam. Another 30 to 40 centimeters of water is expected today, which will cause the water levels to rise on the Ottawa and Mattawa Rivers.

Conservation authorities vowing to protect flood control programs, despite provincial cuts

While keeping a watch on floodwaters, conservation officials in northeastern Ontario also have an eye on their budgets this spring.

Conservation authority officials are facing a 48 per cent in the provincial funding they receive to monitor flood conditions.

Heavy rain in the forecast is also causing concern in the area.

"A rainfall warning from Environment Canada is in effect," the municipality stated.

"Based on the weather forecast and the latest information provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry—North Bay District, Lake Nipissing has the potential to rise by more than 20 cm by the end of the week."

Some roads are under water in West Nipissing. The municipality has declared a state of emergency.
