Baker says he'd wanted to make a solo album for some time, and had written songs during his time with Hey Rosetta! that didn't quite fit under the band's umbrella. He has written more since focusing on his solo work, though it's a process he describes as challenging.
"I felt free of our catalogue and the expectations on us," he says, on one hand, but was "almost too free really; I was alone for most of it just writing and getting lost wondering if it's any good or not."
Baker road-tested the songs in some intimate acoustic shows, now released as the Side Door Sessions, and he has distilled them to a collection that feels remarkably comforting in its mix of lightness and longing, positivity and pathos.
