Medicine Hat's Kalan Porter new Canadian Idol

Kalan Porter was crowned the new Canadian Idol Thursday night, while fans gathered in his hometown screamed and cried.
About 4,000 people packed the arena in Medicine Hat, Alta., to watch the reality show finale, where Porter sang Nature Boy.
Theresa Sokyrka, a 23-year-old from Saskatoon, was the runner-up in the contest where Canadians phone in to vote for their favourite singer.
Porter, 18, won a recording contract and previewed his first single Thursday night – Awake in a Dream, which was written for the show's winner.
At one point during the contest's run, phone lines in Medicine Hat were overwhelmed by fans rushing to vote for Porter. People are allowed to vote as many times as they can.
