Why Juno Award nominee Nuela Charles loved Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Nuela Charles is a soul-pop singer and songwriter from Edmonton. The soulful Charles released her debut album way back in 2012 — and in 2018 she has earned her first nomination for a Juno Award in the adult contemporary of the year category for her third album Distant Danger.
She's up against names such as Michael Bublé and Jann Arden for the award. The 2019 Juno Awards will air live from London, Ont. on Sunday, March 17, 2019 on CBC Television, CBC Radio and CBCMusic.ca.
Charles says a book that she's been reading lately is the bestselling YA fantasy book Children of Blood and Bone, which is the first in Tomi Adeyemi's Legacy of Orisha series.
"Children of Blood and Bone follows the main character Zélie in this time where she grew up with magic, but an evil king came and he banned it and essentially suppressed this group of people who would otherwise be magical. It's about her and the king's daughter and their adventure in trying to get magic back to their people. It's just a great fantasy adventure. It's also really well written. It definitely keeps you on your toes and makes you want to read it more."
