The family of Adam Travis Martin, Winnipeg's first homicide victim of 2019, say the 31-year-old was a caring protector and great lover of the outdoors.
Martin was from Gillam, Man. He was visiting Winnipeg for the holidays when he was shot and killed, his younger sister said Thursday.
"He had his troubles in life, like everyone, but he didn't deserve to be killed. We're all in shock still and all our hearts are broken," Angela Martin said in an online message to CBC.
Martin spent much of his life in the bush, she said.
"He lived for trapping, hunting and fishing."

Martin was found outside of a house on Nairn Avenue, near Allan Street, in the city's Elmwood neighbourhood around 6 a.m. on New Year's Day, Winnipeg police said.
He had a gunshot wound and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
Martin leaves behind a daughter, Aryanna, 7, and a son, Dom, 4, said his sister.
"He was my big brother, the one I ran to for a hug," Martin said.
"If anyone was down, he would always find a way to brighten up the situation and get a laugh."
Chantel Bear, a close friend and distant relative of Martin's, described him as a fierce protector in the family.
"[He] always looked after his family, his cousins, his friends," she said in a telephone interview.
"He was just an awesome guy. Never leaves without giving you a hug and telling you he loved you."
Winnipeg police's homicide unit is investigating Martin's death.
Anyone with information for investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
