Coke bust off Nova Scotia coast

Nine people are in custody Tuesday after more than 500 kilograms of cocaine was discovered in a sailboat off the coast of Nova Scotia.
The cocaine, which police say was coming to Canada from South America, had a street value of about $16 million.
The RCMP said the 14-metre sailboat, Friendship, was boarded Monday night. Gilles Thomas of Varennes, Que. was arrested on the boat.
Also arrested at locations in Quebec, Nova Scotia and Antigua were:
  • Richard Gagnon, 40, of Verdun, Que.
  • Pierre Gagnon, 40, of Carignan, Que.
  • Nathalie Patry, 39, of Carignan, Que.
  • Dante Tagliaventi, 45, of Antigua
  • Diane Brosseau, 41, of Varennes, Que.
  • Roger Bourbeau, 65, of Longueuil, Que.
Bourbeau was charged with cocaine importation, and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The others were each charged with two counts of conspiracy to import.
Two more people were arrested but their names were not released.
