Arrest made in hit and run that seriously injured Calgary police officer

Officer was taken to hospital and remains off duty while recovering

Calgary police have charged a man with hit and run and aggravated after a collision in August that left an officer with serious injuries.
An officer in District 8, which covers the southernmost portion of the city, was investigating a suspicious person call in the 200 block of Legacy Boulevard S.E. about 3 a.m. on Aug. 18.
As the officer approached a vehicle, the driver attempted to flee, hitting the officer and running over him.
The officer was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries and remains off duty while recovering.
The suspect vehicle, a white Ford F-150 was found abandoned later that day, in the Evergreen neighbourhood.
Police believed the truck had been stolen 10 days earlier.
A small red hatchback that was believed to have picked up the suspect after he abandoned the F-150 was also recovered on Sept. 9.
A suspect was identified through DNA and fingerprints recovered from the truck, police said.
Andrew James Irwin, 32, of Calgary is charged with:
  • Assault of a police officer with a weapon.
  • Aggravated assault of a peace officer.
  • Dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
  • Failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
He is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 16, 2019.
