As the year draws to a close, CBC Books(external link) is asking Canadian writers to share their favourite books of 2018. Wendy Orr is the author of the middle-grade novel Dragonfly Song, which was a finalist for the 2018 TD Canadian Children's Literature Award.
Orr recommends the collaborative picture book A World of Kindness, put together by the editors of Pajama Press.
"Of all the wonderful Canadian books I've read this year, I'm choosing a particularly beautiful and original picture book for the very young. A World of Kindness, written by the editors of Pajama Press, asks, 'Are you kind?' and then, through simple but thought provoking questions, goes on to demonstrate what kindness means in practice. What makes it truly unique is that the stunning art is by nine very different illustrators, although it still flows seamlessly from page to page. I have a copy put away as a Christmas gift for my one year old granddaughters, but first spent a happy evening exploring it with my parents, finding more depth, detail and discussion the longer we looked — and continually changing our minds about the artwork we most coveted. That 90-year age range seems a good reason to choose it as my favourite for the year."
