Gatineau councillors call for emergency garbage pickup

As frustration grows in Gatineau over illegal dumping, city councillors held a special council meeting Thursday to consider tweaking new rules for garbage pickups and allowing extra curbside collections for bulk items.

Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, councillor for the Plateau district and chair of the city's environment commission, said the meeting on Aug. 23 will look into the recent bylaw that introduced new limits for garbage disposal in Gatineau.

Gatineau residents say illegal dumping has increased since the city imposed new rules around garbage pickup. 

In&nbsp;the first eight days&nbsp;after the changes, the city saw 27 complaints about illegal dumping when previously the city only got a few complaints a year. 

The latest change, which still needs approval from the full council on Nov. 20, would move the city to having eight large item pickups per year. 

It would also continue to waive fees for dropping off large&nbsp;items at its city drop-off centres.

The city also imposed new limits in July on 

 as part of effort to reduce the waste going to landfill. 

Gatineau is aiming to eventually become a zero-waste municipality.
