Council veteran chaired police services board last term
Eli El-Chantiry will represent the ward of West Carleton-March for the next four years, according to unofficial election results.
With 91 of 91 polls counted, El-Chantiry has 65.9 per cent of the vote, and leads his closest rival, Judi Varga-Toth, by more than 2,900 votes. Also running in the riding was James Parsons.
The city clerk is expected to declare the results official by Thursday.
El-Chantiry has served on city council since 2003 and served as deputy mayor during the 2010-14 term. He chaired Ottawa's police services board during the last term.
West Carleton-March is the largest ward in area, but its population is among the smallest. Road quality and access to city services are among the issues residents identified in the lead-up to the election.
