The city's work on 17th Avenue S.W. continues with a new closure between 8th and 9th Streets S.W.
The city's work on 17th Avenue S.W. continues to dig into commutes as the next phase of construction closes another block for several weeks.
Starting Monday, the next phase of the city's $44-million overhaul will see 17th Avenue S.W. closed from Eighth Street to Ninth Street. The closure is in addition to the section already closed between College Lane and Eighth Street S.W., including the intersection at Seventh Street.
College Lane and Ninth Street S.W. will stay open at all times.
The latest section to shut down will stay closed until early November, depending on the weather before stopping construction for the winter. Everything up to Seventh Street S.W. — including the Seventh Street intersection — is expected to open the week of Oct. 1.
While the work continues, Calgary Transit routes No. 2, 6 and 7 will be detoured, making stops along 14th and 15th Avenues for the duration of the closures.
Vehicles will also detour to 14th and 15th Avenues — which have become westbound and eastbound one-way routes — via Fourth Street S.W. and 11th Street S.W.
Businesses along the strip will operate as usual during the construction, and sidewalks continue to be accessible.
The multi-phase project includes rebuilding sidewalks, improving lane designs, adding crosswalks, completely replacing the asphalt and upgrading the utilities underneath, including power, gas, telecommunications, water, and sanitary.
Work is set to continue until mid-November.
