Russian scientists have found the carcass of an ancient foal perfectly preserved in the Siberian permafrost.

The fossil — discovered in the region of Yakutia — has its skin, hair, hooves and tail preserved. Yakutia is also famous for having found woolly mammoth fossils in the permafrost.

Scientists from Russia's Northeast Federal University, who presented the discovery Thursday, said the foal is estimated to be 30,000 to 40,000 years old. They believe it was about two months old when it died.

A frozen woolly mammoth found with a pool of liquid blood last year in Siberia has been given the animal version of an autopsy, providing blood and tissue samples that may be used to clone the extinct ancient animal.

The mammoth '“really stank,” Herridge said. 'It smelled obviously of rotting meat, but weirdly rotting milk as well… and then overlaid on that the strongest bathroom cleaning agent you could possibly think of.'

Tori Herridge, who was present when researchers at Sooam took their samples from Buttercup, said that as of November, the company had not found any intact cells in its mammoth tissue and blood samples.

The skull was reportedly found by a construction worker on the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk highway. It belonged to a much larger Ice age relative of the modern bison currently found in North America.

Semyon Grigoryev, head of the Mammoth Museum in the regional capital of Yakutsk, was surprised by the perfect state of the find,&nbsp;noting&nbsp;it's the best-preserved ancient foal found to date.

The foal was discovered in the Batagaika crater, a huge,&nbsp;100-metre-deep depression in the East Siberian taiga ecoregion.
