Manitoba's northern First Nations elected a new grand chief Wednesday.&nbsp;Former Pimicikamak&nbsp;chief&nbsp;Garrison Settee is the new grand chief of&nbsp;Manitoba&nbsp;Keewatinowi&nbsp;Okimakanak.&nbsp;

Two candidates stepped up&nbsp;after former 

&nbsp;did not seek re-election&nbsp;after a&nbsp;three year reign&nbsp;as grand chief.&nbsp;She&nbsp;went on to take an

&nbsp;at the leadership of the Assembly of First Nations.&nbsp;

Settee received 53 of 89 total votes.&nbsp;

4 Island Lake First Nations pull out of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak

Four First Nations in the Island Lake region have announced that they are opting out of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak organization.

Alex McDougall is chief of Wasagamack First Nation, one of four that have said they are withdrawing from the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak organization. He said he hopes the move will begin a nation-to-nation relationship with the Canadian government.

MKO Grand Chief Sheila North to run for leadership of Assembly of First Nations

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Sheila North has set her sights on a new position as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Sheila North says she honours all the frontline and grassroots advocates for raising awareness about MMIWG.

Sheila North says she won't seek a second term as Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak grand chief when her term ends this year.

"I ran on a platform of transformational change. I did not run for the title, but for the North. It will be my focus," Settee said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Making northern Manitoba a better place for First Nation families is my ultimate goal. That will mean that Canada

 will have to pay more attention to our treaties, to our issues and to our concerns."

Settee thanked North and his opponent Ted Bland after taking the oath of office.&nbsp;

The MKO's annual general assembly is&nbsp;being held on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation and will wrap up Thursday.&nbsp;
