Toronto comic creator Jillian Tamaki picked up her third Eisner Award — considered the Oscars of comics — at the 2018 San Diego Comic Con for her collection of graphic stories Boundless.

The book won the best graphic novel — reprint category. It uses magical realism to explore what happens to the individual when new technology trends disrupt culture, like the sudden widespread existence of a mirror Facebook that shows us our better, alternate selves.

Tamaki's previous books SuperMutant Magic Academy and This One Summer also won Eisner Awards in 2016 and 2015 respectively.

American writer Marjorie Liu and Japanese illustrator Sana Takeda won five Eisner Awards between them for their collaboration on the Image Comics series Monstress. The series started in 2016 and takes place in a steampunk alternate Asia of the 1900s with a matriarchal society. It won best continuing series, best publication for teens (13-17), best writer, best painter/multimedia artist and best cover artist.

American Emil Ferris also had a big night with three awards for her debut graphic novel My Favourite Thing is Monsters. A 1960s horror comic set in Ferris's hometown of Chicago, the book won three of the five categories for which it was nominated: best graphic album — new, best writer/artist and best coloring.

Essayists Roxane Gay and Ta-Nehisi Coates also picked up an award with artist Alitha E. Martinez for Black Panther: World of Wakanda, winning the best limited series category.

The Eisner Awards give out 31 awards to comic creators annually at the San Diego Comic Con. Winners are chosen by an online vote conducted by professionals in the comic industry.
