Ontario Provincial Police says fatigue caused fatal collision
A 33-year-old man from Waterloo region died after a crash that happened on the 401 highway near Kingston.
The man was identified as Cheng Yuan. In the passenger seat was Meiyu Li, a 27-year-old woman from Burnaby, B.C., who was also found dead.
Yuan was driving a small S.U.V. on Friday, when he drove off the roadway and collided with the steel guardrail, causing his vehicle to flip back onto the roadway.
"It stopped almost parallel on the highway," said OPP Const. Roop Sandhu.
The tractor trailer that was driving behind Cheng's vehicle collided with it, Sandhu said.
"We believe fatigue was a factor because the driver had veered off the roadway, which is consistent with somebody not paying attention or being able to maintain their lane," he told CBC News.
The accident happened east of the Odessa ONroute, four kilometres west of Kingston. Officers arrived on scene at approximately 4:15 a.m. to find the two people dead, according to OPP.
Sandhu said both Yuan and Li had relatives coming from China, who have been notified of their death.
"Working with the RCMP and the Chinese Consulate, we were able to get in contact with the family members," he said.
The OPP is reminding the public to not drive while tired.
"If you feel tired, just stop and get some rest. Make sure you travel on the roadway when you're well-rested," he said.
