Environment Canada says winds will be strong enough to break tree branches and damage buildings
A special weather statement for Hamilton has been upgraded to a wind warning, with Environment Canada now indicating gusts up to 100 km/h are likely Friday afternoon.
"Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur," reads the warning from the national weather agency. "Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break."
The initial special weather statement had predicted winds of 70 to 80 km/h.
A low pressure system "racing across Lake Huron and Georgian Bay later today" is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms later in the day, added the agency.
The winds should drop later in the evening as a high pressure ridge moves in.
