26-year-old man pronounced dead at scene in northeast community of Bridgeland
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says a knife was found after a man was shot and killed by Calgary police in Bridgeland on Monday.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., a lone Calgary police officer who was on duty in plainclothes unexpectedly encountered a man at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 6th Street N.E., the agency said.
The officer fired his gun once, striking the man in the upper chest at close range. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was not injured.
The Calgary Police Service said Tuesday that the deceased was known to police, and that he had voiced his intent to kill the officer.
A folding knife with the blade extended was found at the scene.
ASIRT said the victim was identified as a 26-year-old Calgary resident who was on bail with conditions that he not be in possession of weapons at the time of the incident.
The agency said that the man's family has been notified, but his name won't be released, in accordance with policy.
On Thursday, the head of Calgary's police union said the city's police service should break with the provincial agency and reveal the man's name.
ASIRT continues to investigate.
The provincial agency was created in 2008 to provide civilian oversight when a person is killed or suffers serious injury at the hands of police. It also investigates allegations of police misconduct.
