Two men have been arrested by Calgary police and RCMP after a high-speed car chase.
At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Calgary police alerted Airdrie RCMP that the HAWCS helicopter was following a stolen Nissan Maxima north from Calgary toward Airdrie, RCMP said in a release.
The driver of the stolen car began to drive dangerously and at high speeds, police said.
Police were able to use information from HAWCS to get ahead of the car and set up a spike belt on Range Road 292 near Crossfield, which is about 50 kilometres north of Calgary.
The belt slowed down the vehicle, and RCMP — along with the help of their police dogs — arrested the two men in the car. No one was injured.
"Today's arrests and recovery of a stolen vehicle show continued teamwork between the Airdrie RCMP and CPS," said Const. Dan Martin of Airdrie RCMP in a release. "Vehicle thefts are a continuous problem in both of our jurisdictions and they often result in a lot of destruction including: using the vehicle to commit further crimes, driving dangerously on public roads and they're often looking for another vehicle to steal."
