A teenager accused of attacking his grandmother with a sword appeared in Cochrane, Alta., court Tuesday and was ordered by a judge to see a court-appointed psychiatrist.
Marshall Rath, 19, is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
He is set to see the psychiatrist on Wednesday in Calgary. The doctor will then advise the court whether Rath should undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment before the proceedings continue.
The victim is a 79-year-old woman who lives with Rath. Neighbours have told CBC News she is his grandmother.
Police were called to the Bragg Creek home around 12:45 a.m. Friday.
The woman was in life-threatening condition when officers arrived at the residence, but they were able to stabilize her and she was taken to hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
