Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says Toronto's&nbsp;downtown Union Station was the target of a foiled terrorism plot in 2016.

Goodale made the revelation in Regina at an event where new RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki was announced.

Goodale paid tribute to heroic RCMP officers who helped organize an evacuation of Fort McMurray, Alta., during the 2016 wildfires and&nbsp;who caught a school shooter that same year in La Loche, Sask.

Aaron Driver planned attack at large urban centre during rush hour, police say

ISIS sympathizer Aaron Driver, who died during a confrontation with police in Strathroy, Ont., yesterday, had made a video stating his intention to carry out an attack at a "highly populated" area, but did not name a specific location, police said.

Union Station is Canada's busiest transit hub, serving more than 200,000 daily passengers travelling on GO Transit trains, the TTC, Via Rail and Amtrak. 

'Kind of sad' word of terror threat wasn't passed to riders, commuters say

While some Toronto transit riders said they would have liked to have known that GTA transit staff were on heightened alert over a terror threat, one security expert said passengers would only be told about a potential threat if law enforcement had received word that a specific location was being targeted.

Goodale also asked those in attendance to think of the officers who stopped suspected terrorist Aaron Driver "before he could&nbsp;attack Union Station in Toronto."

It was the first time Union Station was confirmed as Driver's target.

Driver died in 2016 during an altercation with RCMP officers in Strathroy, Ont., after they were tipped to a martyrdom video made by&nbsp;someone planning an attack using homemade explosive devices.

At the time, RCMP said the attack was imminent, targeting an urban centre during rush hour.

The public safety minister asked those in attendance to think of the officers who stopped suspected terrorist Aaron Driver 'before he could attack Union Station in Toronto.'
