Get ready, music fans in London, Ont. The Juno Awards are coming your way in 2019.
"This city has seen incredible growth with its music scene and as such, is the perfect platform to celebrate Canadian talent," said Allan Reid, president and CEO of CARAS, the Juno Awards and MusiCounts, via press release.
The 2019 Juno Week celebrations will kick off March 11, 2019, culminating in the 48th annual Juno Awards, to be broadcast live on CBC from Budweiser Gardens on Sunday, March 17, 2019.
This will be the first time that London will host the Juno Awards.
"We are excited to show the world how culturally rich and diverse London is," said Chris Campbell, director of culture and entertainment tourism at Tourism London. "The Juno Awards is London's opportunity to bring artists and music fans to our great city to showcase our hospitality and our growing music scene and we could not be happier to be the 2019 host city."
Daiene Vernile, Ontario's minister of tourism, culture and sport, adds, "Our vibrant culture is driven by our exceptional talent and diversity. We have a thriving music industry that makes a significant contribution to Ontario's economy by creating jobs, generating sales and building the province's profile at an international level. I am thrilled to welcome the Junos to London."
London has a rich musical history. Not only is it the birthplace of bandleader Guy Lombardo and country music artist Tommy Hunter, but it's also the city where Johnny Cash proposed to June Carter. The Junos named its Jack Richardson Producer of the Year Award after the famed London, Ont., music producer.
The annual Juno Awards travel to a different Canadian city each year. They've been hosted by St. John's, Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Halifax, Saskatoon, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Regina and Hamilton.
While we wait for London's turn in 2019, Canada's music industry is preparing for the 2018 Juno Awards. Wherever you are in the world, you can watch the Juno Awards live from the Rogers Centre in Vancouver on March 25 at cbcmusic.ca/junos.
