Winnipeg police say two people are in hospital after a man&nbsp;was shot inside a downtown apartment building early Thursday morning.

Police said they were called to the Holiday Towers apartment building on Hargrave&nbsp;Street&nbsp;at 2:15 a.m. Inside a suite&nbsp;they found a man in his 20s&nbsp;"suffering from a significant gunshot wound to his lower body."

Officers&nbsp;applied a tourniquet to the victim, who was then rushed to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

Police told CBC they taped off an entrance to Cityplace&nbsp;after a woman from the suite ran outside to call 911. It opened again just before 7 a.m.

The woman suffered a minor injury from a fall, said police, and she was also taken to hospital.

The&nbsp;investigation is continuing&nbsp; and anyone with information is asked to call&nbsp;204-986-6219&nbsp;or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Winnipeg police officers shot five people so far this year — more than police in larger cities like Calgary, Toronto or Vancouver, according to data provided to CBC by police services and police oversight agencies.

The Independent Investigation Unit is investigating allegations that a woman was assaulted by Winnipeg police officers.
