Tanya Talaga, James Maskalyk, Jan Wong on longlist for 2018 RBC Taylor Prize

Tanya Talaga, James Maskalyk and Jan Wong are among the authors named to the longlist for the 2018 RBC Taylor Prize, announced this week.
The RBC Taylor Prize is an annual prize for Canadian nonfiction, which comes with a $30,000 cash award for the winner and $5,000 for each of the remaining finalists.
The complete longlist is:
- Island of the Blue Foxes by Stephen R. Bown
- How to Fall in Love with Anyone by Mandy Len Catron
- Yardwork by Daniel Coleman
- The Marriott Cell by Mohamed Fahmy, with Carol Shaben
- Solitude by Michael Harris
- Life on the Ground Floor by James Maskalyk
- A History of Canada in Ten Maps by Adam Shoalts
- Seven Fallen Feathers by Tanya Talaga
- In the Name of Humanity by Max Wallace
- Apron Strings by Jan Wong
Newspaper reporter Talaga has been nominated for her book Seven Fallen Feathers, about the deaths of seven First Nation students who were living in Thunder Bay to attend high school. The book was a finalist for the 2017 Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction.
Emergency room physician and author Maskalyk is on the longlist for Life on the Ground Floor, a memoir chronicling his career treating patients in emergency rooms around the world, including in Ethiopia, Cambodia and Bolivia. The book won the $60,000 Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction in 2017, one of the biggest prizes in Canada for nonfiction.
Food writer Jan Wong is nominated for Apron Strings, a memoir about her trip with her son Sam to travel the world and learn how to cook three of the world's most famous cuisine: French, Italian and Chinese.
The prize shortlist will be released on Jan. 10, 2018, with the winner to be announced on Feb. 26, 2018. This year's jury consists of Christine Elliot, Anne Giardini and James Polk.
The winner of the 2017 RBC Taylor Prize was Ross King for Mad Enchantment, a nonfiction book on the life and art of Claude Monet.
