In 2013, Anna Todd stumbled upon Wattpad, a free online storytelling platform where users can read and post written works. After browsing through the platform's fan fiction, she decided to take her first leap into writing. So, she sat down and wrote After, a story following Tessa, a freshman at college who falls for the campus bad boy. But in Todd's story, the bad boy is Harry Styles of One Direction.
Within a year of sharing her work on Wattpad, it gained a cult following, becoming the most-viewed work on that website. It has racked up over a billion reads and secured Todd a publishing deal in which she has published eight books already. Now, that story is going to be made into a movie.
Todd's is just one case in a new era of publishing in which aspiring writers are using online communities like Wattpad to showcase their work and get attention from publishing houses and production companies.
Ahead of the release of her ninth novel, Todd joins Tom Power to talk about finding success in unconventional places.
