Engineering a bargain, education and vet schools expensive
Paying out your tuition this year at the University of Prince Edward Island can be a relative bargain or very expensive, depending on what you are studying.
Statistics Canada released a report on tuitions across the country this week.
It found tuitions at UPEI a little above the national average for a humanities degree, and a little below average in science.
Tuitions at UPEI varied a lot more from the average in other disciplines. Engineering is a bargain, with tuition just 74 per cent of the national average. Veterinary medicine and education, however, were very expensive, both with tuitions more than 160 per cent of the national average.
Degree | Cost | % of national average |
---|---|---|
Education | $8,031 | 172% |
Humanities | $6,030 | 108% |
Physical and life sciences and technologies | $6,030 | 97% |
Mathematics, computer and information sciences | $6,030 | 84% |
Engineering | $6,030 | 74% |
Veterinary medicine | $12,746 | 166% |
UPEI officials note its education degree is compressed into 12 months, where at most universities the program is two years.
For Island residents who have graduated from a P.E.I. high school, the George Coles Bursary can offset the cost of the first year of university, offering $2,200 to students starting at UPEI.
