Longlists for the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals, the U.K.'s most prestigious prizes for children's literature and illustration respectively, have been revealed and three Canadian children's books have made the longlists.

Vancouver-based author Susin Nielsen has been nominated for a CILIP Carnegie Medal for her young adult novel We Are All Made of Molecules. Nielsen will contend against deceased novellist Terry Pratchett's final work, The Shepherd's Crown, as well as the Costa Book of the Year winner Frances Hardinge's The Lie Tree.

Canadian illustrators Jon Klassen and Sydney Smith have been longlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal. Klassen, who has previously won the prize, is nominated this year for Sam and Dave Dig a Hole written by Mac Barnett. Smith is up for his Governor General's Literary Award-winning book Footpath Flowers (titled Sidewalk Flowers in Canada), written by JonArno Lawson.

Both the CILIP Carnegie Medal and CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal come with golden medals and £500 ($1,000.10) worth of books to donate to a library of the winner's choice. For the first time, both prize winners will also receive the £5,000 ($9,902.50) Colin Mears Award, which was previously only given to Greenaway Medal winners.

Both prizes are judged by a panel of librarians. The shortlist will be announced on March 15, and the winners will be announced on June 20.
