WestJet and Air Canada flights still grounded but both airlines advise guests to check flight status
WestJet said flood waters will have to recede before resuming flights to Houston as Tropical Storm Harvey continues to pound southeast Texas.
On Friday, WestJet and Air Canada cancelled weekend flights from Calgary to Houston in anticipation of the storm.
WestJet said it would make a decision when to resume flights on Sunday, and a spokesperson for the airline said Monday's flights are expected to be canceled as well.
"It's day-to-day right now," said Lauren Stewart, spokesperson for WestJet. "We are monitoring the situation on the ground and will make a decision to return when the weather and flooding allow us to."
Stewart said there are two daily WestJet flights to Houston from Calgary and flights remain grounded until further notice.
Air Canada flights from Calgary to Houston were also cancelled for Monday, but a spokesperson for the airline said flights operated in cooperation with United Airlines may go ahead as scheduled.
Air Canada suggest guests check their flight status online regularly for more information and said guests who had their flights canceled can rebook at no charge.
Stewart said WestJet guests can also check the status of their flights on online for updates.
"We also have an advisory posted on the website detailing change [or] cancel for any guests who wish to make alternate arrangements," Stewart said.
WestJet customers can visit WestJet's trip advisories online to make flight arrangements.
Harvey is the fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. in 13 years and the strongest to strike Texas since 1961's Hurricane Carla.
At least five people have been reported killed in the aftermath of the storm.
