Enjoy the rhythm of Reggafest or do some dancing at Expo Latino
The weekend is fast approaching once again and being summer, there's plenty of options available for those wanting to whet their musical appetite.
And if that's not your cup of tea, The Homestretch director Tracy Fuller also has some ideas for those who want to stay home and binge on some shows.
Reggaefest
By its simplest definition, a Rastagarian is a Calgarian who shares the values of Caribbean culture and, specifically, Reggae music.
They are the driving force behind RaggaeFest — which runs Thursday to Saturday at Shaw Millennium Park.
The music plays from 4 to 11 p.m. on Friday and noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday and this year's lineup features the likes of Aktivate (Calgary), Kirk Diamond (Saskatoon), Al-beeno (Toronto), Etana (Jamaica), Natural Fyah (Toronto), and the PowerHouze Band (Calgary).
Full info is available at the Reggaefest website.
Expo Latino
There's also Expo Latino happening this weekend at Prince's Island Park, featuring the Juno award-winning Canadian-Chilean guitarist Oscar Lopez, who hits the stage Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
The event gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. and the music, dancing and fun starts up again at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
Other performers this weekend include Brisas Del Palmar, from Cuba, and Ache Brasil, from Vancouver, and Calgary's own DJ Henry.
The full schedule and information can be found at the Expo Latino website.
The Defenders on Netflix
For those wanting to stay close to home this weekend, Marvel's newest series, The Defenders, is being released Friday.
Now if you're not up-to-speed on your Marvel Universe media, The Defenders is basically a series dedicated to all the Netflix spin-off characters.
Kinda like how The Avengers brought together Iron Man, The Hulk and Captain America after all their individual movies got them started
The Defenders are: Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist and rumour has it Electra even makes an appearance.
What Happened to Monday (also on Netflix)
And If you don't want to commit to a series this weekend, then another amazing release is What Happened to Monday, starring Noomi Rapace — who most people will know from the original Danish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movies.
People who love Orphan Black will definitely want to check this out as Noomi plays seven sisters — all with different characters and interests — who pretend to be the same person
It's a sci-fi dystopian story where overpopulation has led to a one-child policy, but these seven sisters try to outwit the system.
