A family escaped after a fire started in a garage and spread to a house on Danube Drive Friday evening.

Firefighters were called around 7:20 p.m. for a report of a garage fire. By the time they arrived, the fire had spread to the front of the wood-framed house.

The family fled to the backyard and firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Firefighters said the fire was accidentally caused by a deep fryer in the garage.

No one was injured. A damage estimate was not yet available.

Assault becomes homicide after stabbing victim dies

An assault that sent a man to hospital Friday afternoon has become a homicide after the victim died.

Winnipeg police are calling on help from the public to find a suspect in the death of Dean Yurkiw, 50, who was found in a home on Redwood Avenue last summer.

Police were called to Redwood Avenue and Aikins Street around 4 p.m. Friday.

All flights leaving Winnipeg were on hold Sunday while investigators looked into a security incident, said a spokesperson for the Winnipeg Airports Authority.
