Calgary Police Service's traffic unit investigating early Friday morning incident
A woman was hit and killed by a garbage truck early Friday morning in northeast Calgary, according to police.
Officers were called to a parking lot at 2980 26th St. N.E. for reports of a pedestrian collision in a commercial area, just off Barlow Trail.
Acting Sgt. Rob Lewis with the Calgary Police Service said the incident happened in the parking lot of Cruise Canada RV, a recreational vehicle sales and rental company.
"She was somehow in the parking lot when the collision occurred," Lewis said. "It's still under investigation as to why she was in the parking lot."
Police said the 58-year-old driver of the garbage truck was picking up waste from a large garbage bin when the woman was hit by the reversing vehicle.
The woman was struck by the right rear side of the garbage truck and dragged a short distance. Police said the woman was then run over as the truck moved forward.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lewis said the woman was not employed by either Cruise Canada RV or the garbage collection company.
The only witness to the incident was the driver of the garbage truck, and investigators have no surveillance camera recordings of the collision, police said.
Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
