Northbound lanes reopen after traffic was rerouted for hours during the investigation
Calgary police believe the suspect in a serious assault Thursday morning was later killed when he was hit by a semi on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Crossfield.
Airdrie RCMP are still investigating the fatal collision between a semi truck and a pedestrian on the route, which is also known as Highway 2.
The incident happened just north of the Highway 72 overpass, near Crossfield.
Airdrie RCMP said in a release that the deceased was a 46-year-old man from Calgary who was involved in a domestic assault in the city earlier on Thursday.
Mounties said the man was travelling northbound on Highway 2 when he pulled over, exited his vehicle and walked into the driving lane, where he was struck and killed by an oncoming semi.
Traffic in the area was rerouted for several hours but police said late Thursday afternoon the collision had been cleared.
