Tornado warning briefly issued for southern Alberta communities

Airdrie and area warned of 'dangerous’ situation on Wednesday evening by Environment Canada

Communities just north of Calgary were under an Environment Canada tornado warning for about an hour on Wednesday night, with the agency describing it as a "dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation."
Environment Canada started tracking a severe thunderstorm at 7:14 p.m. "that is possibly producing a tornado."
"Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible," the national weather agency said on its website(external link).
The warning for Airdrie was in effect from 7:29 p.m. until 8:25 p.m.
The warning was then downgraded to a watch for the following communities until it too was dropped by late evening:
  • Carstairs
  • Stirlingville
  • Cremona
  • Water Valley
  • Olds
  • Didsbury
  • Sundre
  • Airdrie
  • Crossfield
  • Bottrel
  • Madden
  • Cochrane

"This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately," warned Environment Canada earlier.

On Tuesday, Environment Canada confirmed a tornado touched down Monday evening northwest of the Calgary airport. There were no reported injuries or damage.
