June is Indigenous Book Club Month. CBC Books will publish a recommendation each day from an Indigenous writer for a book written by another Indigenous author.
Jay Odjick recommends Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones, who lives in Boulder, Colorado.
"Stephen Graham Jones' Mongrels is at its heart a story about family, growing up, belonging and the struggle to survive — with not only heart but teeth. A refreshingly new and original take on a classic 'monster,' Mongrels is a modern horror marvel. Featuring well-crafted characters that a reader can truly get behind, Graham Jones' work is also imbued with a healthy dose of Native humour, refreshing in itself as our sense of humour is such a true trait of Indigenous peoples.
"Werewolves may not be real — but the characters in Mongrels are as real as any people you will meet in our world. Give it a read during the next full moon and howl to your friends — Mongrels is a modern classic and a must read."
Jay Odjick is a multi-talented illustrator, author and television producer from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabe community in Quebec. He is the illustrator of the children's book Blackflies written by Robert Munsch. He also wrote and illustrated the graphic novel Kagagi: The Raven.
